Recap: Box Hill Central Celebrates the Year of the Rooster

18 Feb 2017

Gong Xi Fa Cai everyone! The official start of Lunar New Year was on Saturday the 28th of January. To celebrate, Box Hill Central offered activities for the whole family to enjoy and welcome the year of the mighty Rooster.

The celebrations commenced with an official Chinese New Year opening ceremony, as we said goodbye to the year of the monkey and welcomed the rooster with good luck and prosperity.

Of course it would not have been Chinese New Year without the Firecracker Show, the earplugs were optional!

Following all this excitement, we were mesmerised by the Lotus Flower Dragon Dance & Chinese Folk Dancers whose skills had to be seen to be believed.

Many got in line for the God of Fortune, who was there to bestow blessings and red pockets.

To top it all off, the crowd was exhilarated with traditional Chinese Lion and Dragon Dancing –Where each dance tells a story that reflects important Chinese values: respect, courage, spirit and comradeship.

However don’t be disheartened if you missed out on the fun, the Chinese New Year celebration will continue this Saturday the 4th of February 2017.

  • 10.30am & 12noon – Don’t worry, if you missed out or just wanted to see more, the Dragon Dancers will be back to perform not once but twice!
  • 11am-2pm – Lights, camera, action! Watch the heat rise in the kitchen as Ding Shi Live Cooking Competition returns to Box Hill Central for its third annual grand finale.
  • 11am-5pm – All that fierce competition may have worked up your appetite so please enjoy an Asian Style BBQ voluntarily cooked by Officers from the Box Hill Police Station, where all proceed go towards their ongoing hard work in protective services for the community.
