Frighteningly Easy Finger Foods To Make This Halloween

Let your imagination run wild this Halloween, with your costume and in the kitchen. If you’re unsure what to serve, rest assured there are plenty of simple Halloween snacks that are as fun to make as they are delectable.

From pan-fried creepy crawlies to boo-tiful sweet treats, we’ve gathered some quick and easy finger food ideas that are the ultimate hunger-busters.

Grab all the ingredients you need from Coles or Woolworths before getting started.

Sausage mummies

A spooky take on the traditional sausage roll, these little mummies are heaps of fun for the whole family and can be brought to life in just 30 minutes. Eat them hot or cold with a side of ‘bloody’ tomato relish.

Ingredients:

  • 24 small sausages or cocktail frankfurts
  • 4 sheets ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 1 egg, lightly whisked
  • Your relish of choice

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 200˚C and line two baking trays with baking paper.
  2. Grill your sausages or frankfurts under the grill on medium-high for 6-8 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cut the puff pastry into 1cm-thick strips using a knife and lightly coat in egg wash. Wrap the strips around the sausages, leaving a small gap between each twirl.
  4. Place sausages on baking tray and cook for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let them cool slightly before creating eyes using the sauce of your choice. Our tip, ensure a squeeze bottle for the sauce for the perfect googly eyes!

Meringue ghosts

These light and fluffy meringues are the perfect bite-size creations to whip up for loved ones. The spooky swirls can even make a gooey addition to the top of a chocolate cupcake or cookie as a decoration.

Ingredients:

  • 3 large egg whites
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp cornflour
  • ¾ cup caster sugar
  • A handful of mini dark chocolate chips (to decorate)
  • Piping bag and piping nozzle

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 120˚C and line two baking trays with baking paper.
  2. Place egg whites into a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until it forms soft peaks.
  3. Add the sugar slowly, one tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat the eggs. Beat until the sugar has dissolved and the meringue is silky and firm.
  4. Whisk in the vanilla and cornflour.
  5. Place the piping nozzle into the piping bag and then spoon mixture into the bag. Pipe swirls of the meringue onto the baking trays, ensuring they resemble a ghost-like shape.
  6. Press two chocolate chips into the meringue to create eyes, and one below to create a mouth.
  7. Bake the meringue ghosts for one hour or until they are crisp but still pale in colour. Turn oven off and allow the meringues to cool inside the oven before devouring.

Witch finger cookies

Ideal for aspiring bakers, these Halloween snacks not only have a creepy crunch but look freakishly convincing.

Ingredients:

  • 100g of butter
  • 100g of caster sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 225g of plain flour
  • ½ tsp of baking powder
  • Blanched almonds
  • Strawberry jam

Method:

  1. Beat the butter and sugar together until pale, before adding the egg and vanilla extract. When well combined, add the flour and baking powder and stir to form a dough. Cover and let this chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oven to 165˚C and line two baking trays. Using small portions of the dough, roll each piece into a finger shape, measuring it against one of your own as a guide. Use a knife press small lines into the dough lightly to make ‘knuckles’ and softly press an almond in the top to create a shape where the ‘nail’ will later sit.
  3. Once you have formed all fingers, place them on the baking trays and cook for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Let the fingers cool, before spooning a little bit of strawberry jam onto the nail base and place the almond on top.

A dip on the dark side

For those snack lovers with a more mature palette, this chilling take on black bean hummus is the perfect platter addition this Halloween.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 400g can of black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tbsp of tahini
  • 3 tbsp of lime or lemon juice
  • 1 tsp of cumin
  • 3 tbsp of Greek yoghurt (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Additional yogurt or tahini dressing for decoration
  • 2 black olives for decoration

Method:

  1. Combine the garlic and black beans in a food processor until pureed.
  2. Slowly add the remaining ingredients until the mixture is nice and smooth, tasting as you go to ensure you’ve added the perfect amount of salt and spice for your tastebuds.
  3. Spoon the hummus into a serving dish, smoothing the top. Using a piping bag (or sandwich bag with a small corner cut out) pipe on the spiderweb using tahini or Greek yoghurt – here’s where steady hands and creativity come into play!
  4. Slice your black olives up into a big body, small head and eight thin legs.
  5. Pop your creation into the fridge until you’re ready to serve, accompanied by bread, crackers or chips.
